Delaware officers fatally shoot man in wheelchair
Authorities say a shooting occurred and the man died at the scene.
Delaware police shot and killed an armed man in a wheelchair who had apparently attempted suicide Wednesday, prompting bystanders to yell at officers for opening fire. It showed the man lift himself somewhat in his wheelchair a couple of times and then a dozen or so shots rang out.
In January, two Wilmington police officers came under scrutiny after shooting Marvin Jones, who is black, during a traffic stop, leaving the man a quadriplegic.
The man has been identified as 28-year-old Jeremy “Bam” McDowell, according to Robert Bovell, who knows the family.
According to a city spokeswoman, Police Chief Bobby L Cummings went to the scene and met with neighbors and relatives after the death.
Police have said the man was armed when they shot him.
“They couldn’t [use a Taser on] him?” “Instead, they killed him instead”.
She also said Mr. McDowell had been in a wheelchair since being shot and paralyzed when he was 18.
Further details were not immediately available.
Officers were called to the scene on Tulip Street after reports a man in a wheelchair had shot himself, Sergeant Andrea Janvier told CNN. Police found Alexander Myers sitting on his front porch armed with a rifle. They say he had already shot himself prior to them coming to the scene and had a handgun, which they had ordered him to drop.
A Miami-Dade Police officer turned herself in, two years after being accused of using her authority to take revenge on her ex-husband.
“Because of the complexities, because of the dynamics, CIT is beyond training, it’s more than training”, he said.
