Delhi celebrates second car- free day
It will be the third “Car-Free Day”, organised in national capital.
Delhi government on Sunday held its second auto free day and held a rally in Dwarka. “I will also go to my office on cycle on January 22”, Kejriwal said. “Government is receiving warm response from the people towards the initiative”, Rai said here.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Delhi government presently holds Car-Free Day on separate stretches in different areas on the 22nd of every month.
He also said that when a few NGOs and Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) measured pollution level between Red Fort and India Gate during the first “Car-Free Day” last month, they found that there was 60 per cent decrease in pollution level on the stretch.
“We will hold the next “Car-Free Day” in Patparganj area of East Delhi. From chief minister to legislator to businessmen and government officials, everyone who has come here today is saying that one should opt for cycle instead of cars for one day”.
Speaking at the rally, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said: “So many people have gathered here today, I guess residents of Delhi are ready to use cycle once again”. I’ll go 2 my office on cycle – Arvind Kejriwal (@ArvindKejriwal) November 22, 2015//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js ” On January 22, we will organise Car-Free Day across Delhi. Before the event started, I was concerned if people will come and support us and if I will be able to ride a bicycle after 25 years. High pollution levels have anxious environmentalists, public and the authorities in the city of 16 million people, which the World Health Organisation previous year said had the worst air quality in the world.
In Dwarka, people of all ages participated in the cycling event, which was also attended by police officers.
Transport Minister Rai said, “It is true that public transport is not in a better condition so that people leave their cars, but in view of rising pollution in Delhi, we will have to do something in this regard”.
