Delhi Police gets two-day custody of Somnath Bharti
Bharti said that he had not been running away from law but availing the legal remedies as per the Constitution.
This comes after the Supreme Court earlier in the day rejected his bail plea and ordered him to surrender. It was only after the rejection of his bail plea by the High Court that Mr. Kejriwal condemned Somnath Bharti as a damage control exercise fearing rebuke by women right activists.
“This too shall pass and truth shall prevail”, Bharti tweeted from an undisclosed location around an hour before he gave up. Acting on the complaint of Lipika, the Delhi police had registered an FIR against Bharti, on charges of domestic violence and attempt to murder, and attempt to cause miscarriage without the woman’s consent under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Dwarka North police station in west Delhi. “In compliance with the direction…I am here to surrender”, Bharti had said. Police said Bharti was on the run for around 19-20 days and he could not expect swift action from police in a single day. The special public prosecutor, appearing for the police, said that Bharti’s custody was also required in connection with the investigation relating to his pet dog Don, for which an expert has already been consulted. “Even though we don’t anticipate trouble but seniors officials directed is to be alert in case Mr Bharti is accompanied by his supporters”, an officer said. Bharti could be taken to Mathura and Agra to confront him with his “harbourers,”.
Congress leader JP Agarwal on Tuesday said there seems to be a kind of partnership between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP leader Somnath Bharti.
Terming the allegations towards former Delhi Law Minister Bharti by his spouse, Lipika Mitra, as “very critical”, Justice Suresh Kait of the excessive courtroom had stated she has been tolerating his “cruelty” and “brutal assault”. “We will also go through the files and also find out if the wife wants to sit in mediation”, the court had said.
