Delhi: Protest by civic workers aganist Delhi government
The AAP government Saturday deployed 91 trucks and support staff across the city to sweep the streets as municipal employees continued their protest over unpaid dues.
All the three wings of the MCD – South, East and North – are controlled by the BJP, the AAP’s main rival in Delhi.
The agitating sanitation workers staged a protest in front of the residences of Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel and Delhi Health and PWD Minister Satyendar Jain.
The BJP hit back at the AAP government accusing it of playing “party politics” in not releasing money to the corporations.
Sources said that Delhi government is planning to take the help of the volunteers of Aam Aadmi Party to clear out the garbage.
At least 1.5 lakh sanitation workers have gone on an indefinite strike from Friday over non-payment of salaries in Delhi.
Alleging financial bunglings and mismanagement, Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia launched a two-pronged attack on the three municipal corporations as workers’ strike entered the second day leading to garbage pile up in areas across the city. “They have worked. They are asking for their rights”, Kejriwal tweeted. AAP government is clearing them.
The civic body is divided into three zones, all three run by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “Despite several appeals, our demands are not considered”, said Sanjay Gehlot, president of Mazdoor Vikas Sanyukta Morcha. They can ask the MCD officials as to why they are not paying the employees, ‘ said another protestor.
The court issued notice on a plea filed through advocate Vishal Mittal, who sought the court’s direction to the authorities to make immediate payment of salaries and arrears to the municipal workers. “SDMC employees are paid salaries on time and this dereliction of duty is causing inconvenience to residents”, said the corporation in a statement.
