Dell unveils XPS 12, the world’s first 2-in-1 with a 4K display
Dell also claims the title of the smallest 15-inch laptop with the new Dell XPS 15. However, svelte doesn’t come without compromise: both the XPS 13 and XPS 15 still have their webcams placed at the bottom of the display, a decision that baffled us when Ars reviewed the XPS 13. The system is virtually identical to a previous version unveiled at the worldwide CES 2015 trade show in January, but now it is upgraded with the new Intel processors, which offer better performance, long battery life, and other features such as improved security.
The bottom bezel is the largest; on the left side of the machine, it holds the webcam. The only downside is that you’ll still get a glossy display at 4K, so if you want the matte option you have to pick the non-touch HD version.
The XPS 13 possesses a nearly without boundary lines InfinityEdge present.
The XPS 15 has a lot in common with the 13 in a slightly larger chassis. Since the keyboard comes with a fixed kickstand, users would not be able to adjust the display position. Fortunately, this doesn’t seem to affect the Dell XPS 15’s thin design though.
The biggest differences, however, are under the hood. A more expensive $1299 option includes the 4K display and 256GB of storage, and both will ship with the same 2.7GHz Core M5 processor. Instead it took a full backlit keyboard and precision touchpad from one of its laptops that attaches to the tablet via a magnetic connector.
The XPS 13 and 15 are carbon fibre and machined aluminium and the entire XPS portfolio has Corning Gorilla Glass NBT options on touch displays. Dell told Ars the company wanted to make the XPS 15 an all-purpose notebook that appealed to creatives and gamers, so they added an optional Nvidia GDDR5 GPU to the notebook. The laptops are an example of a whole generation of new devices based on Intel’s newest chips and Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system.
Expect around 18 hours of battery life from the Full HD model and 11 hours of wireless web browsing with the Quad HD.
Announced just after Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book reveal, Dell’s revamped XPS family begins with the all-new XPS 12. Despite the slow start to the Surface, there is something about the tablet with a keyboard concept that’s speaking to manufacturers.
The lack of regular inputs also means that the XPS 12 isn’t compatible with a number useful Dell add-ons, such as the Dell Power Pack.
At 2.8 pounds, the XPS 12 is ultra lightweight – not as light as the new MacBook, which is only two pounds, but still light enough to toss in your bag and not feel it on your shoulders. I was also impressed with the size of the trackpad, which felt fairly responsive. With the keyboard attached, it grows to about an inch thick. With a price-tag that starts at $999, however, it better be good.
Another important factor was how easily the device connected to the keyboard base. You drop the device into the slot at a 90-degree angle and it slides into the proper place.
8MP world facing camera, 5MP user facing. Dell also claims that the XPS 15’s display can achieve 100 percent minimum Adobe RGB, so the image quality is higher than ever.
