Delta cancels more than 900 flights ahead of winter storm
The unsafe Northeast blizzard predicted to cripple the country’s air travel has forced the cancellation of 8,000 flights since Sunday.
For Tuesday expect snowfall rates of 1 to 4 inches per hour across the northeast, with blizzard or near-blizzard conditions possible in coastal areas and parts of eastern Pennsylvania, eastern NY state, CT and western MA.
Thousands of people across the country will experience similar travel woes as airlines and airports prepare for Winter Storm Stella, which is expected to dump almost two feet of snow and bring heavy winds throughout the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, late Monday through Tuesday.
More than 80 percent of flights between NY and Boston were cancelled Tuesday.
Almost all flights were canceled at the three big airports serving New York City, which remained under a blizzard warning for much of Tuesday. As many as 5,000 flights were canceled nationwide.
About 3,000 flights were canceled at the region’s three major airports on Tuesday. Hundreds of flights have been canceled in advance of an upcoming winter storm. This figure is expected to grow despite the falling snow being less than estimated in Philadelphia and Washington.
Meanwhile, the priority right now is the State-wide State of Emergency that has been called into effect by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo across all 62 counties.
Up to 20 inches of snow might fall in North Jersey, as up to 2 inches per hour could accumulate during the height of the storm on Tuesday morning.
Some recovery is expected on Wednesday, however, carriers were cancelling flights.
Parts of eight states are under a National Weather Service blizzard warning into Tuesday evening, says a NBC News report. Tuesday night into Wednesday heavy snow is forecast throughout much of New England, while farther south the snowfall will begin to taper off. At least 50 departing flights were canceled in Rochester. Chicago is a main connection point with many flights in and out of the Springfield airport. Other airlines, like Virgin America and United, are waiving differences in fares on top of waiving flight change fees.
