Delta’s new airport security lanes could double the speed of baggage scanning
Travelers who had braced for long lines and long waits were instead moving through most USA airports fairly quickly Monday, as the busy Memorial Day travel weekend drew to a close.
A government watchdog agency says the Transportation Safety Administration is deficient in its oversight of airport perimeter security – and it could create unsafe vulnerability for the entire US commercial aviation system.
A TSA spokesman, who declined to be named, said the agency is working with stakeholders to “mitigate risks”.
“We are proud of what appears to be a successful kickoff to our summer travel season”, Interim Airport General Manager Roosevelt Council, Jr. said Wednesday morning.
Eighteen of the guns had a round in the chamber, the TSA said.
Even with a TSA screener hiring binge now, the time needed to evaluate and train hundreds of new workers will minimize the front-line relief until long after our summer travel misery fades to bitter memory.
Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson requested approval for an additional 600 TSA agents to be hired, and for $28 million to be reprogrammed into converting 2,784 Transportation Security Officers from part-time to full-time. “Congress should quickly approve this request and TSA should prioritize the hiring and conversion of these officers at local New York City-area airports”.
“We’re more anxious about the luggage, honestly”, he said as his wife worked to close a very full carry-on bag. Bob Dunlap of Milford, Michigan, expected to wait an hour to get through a security line that snaked from the Denver airport’s cavernous security plaza all the way back to baggage claim.
United Airlines said it delayed 37 flights from O’Hare in a single day.
It’s been no secret that the Transportation Security Administration has been under fire of late as wait times soared, causing a number of passengers to miss flights. “That means that the TSA, despite having plenty of data, can not pinpoint the biggest vulnerabilities”, AP reported.
