Democracy cannot function at whims and fancies of anyone: Modi
“Sonia Gandhi has called for a meeting of senior leaders at her residence on Sunday evening in which the future course of action on GST will be decided”, a senior Congress member of Parliament said on condition of anonymity. “The Government cannot help them in the matter, nor can the Parliament”. Despite Modi having thrown the ball in the Opposition’s court last week, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was unrelenting in his attack on the prime minister. “The answer to the Congress party leadership landing up in a Chakravyuh is to fight their battle legally and not disrupt Parliament”, Jaitley said in his blog. “We support it”, Bihar JD(U) chief and Rajya Sabha MP Bashistha Narain Singh said.
The government refuted the Congress charge that it had not conveyed how it had tried to accommodate the opposition party’s GST demands.
Arun Jaitley has slammed the Congress over the National Herald case saying the Gandhis have “created a chakravyuh” for themselves.
“You must have seen that these days we are witnessing more and more of these (disruptions)”. I will do whatever comes to my mind. The PM said the poor were not getting their rights as legislations to benefit them were stuck due to disruptions in Parliament.
However, fate took a queer turn the very next week and now the Congress is on the defensive while the BJP is gloating over the developments in the National Herald case. “Does the country run like this?” he said.
In a clear reference to the Congress, that has been stalling both Houses of Parliament in the past couple of days over the National Herald case, he said democracy can not be restricted to elections and governments alone: one of the key dangers before it is mantantra (going by one’s whims and fancies), the other being dhantantra (money power). He said a vibrant democracy requires Jan Bhaagidaari – the participation of the people. Adding, “Ours is such an unregulated economy, we need to deliberate how to encompass diverse sorts of transactions”.
