Democrat mayor resigns after these heinous accusations come to light
Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, the first out gay man to hold that post, announced his resignation today after a fifth man came forward with allegations that Murray had sexually abused him. That prompted OR child-welfare officials to conclude Murray should never again be a foster parent. “How many victims will it take for the Mayor to step down?”
“These accusations are unspeakable and require the utmost attention from our legal and social-service system no matter how long ago they might have occurred”, he said.
It is exactly these kinds of unpalatable choices that lead me to believe Mayor Murray will only continue to tarnish his reputation and the reputation of our city if he continues to mount his very public defense on city time.
In a statement obtained by KONG, Harrell said he intends to make an announcement within five days, after he consults with his family and other members of the Seattle City Council.
“It is time for Mayor Murray to step down….”
“His efforts as a public official to demean and belittle his victims is an abuse of the public trust”, she said.
Murray’s younger cousin, Joseph Dyer, 54, told The Seattle Times that he was 13 when Murray repeatedly molested him for a year while they lived together in Dyer’s mother’s home.
All five accusers say that they were teenagers when the alleged abuse occurred. “We hope it helps the others in some way”.
Murray has stated that the latest allegation, made by his cousin, could have been a result of a longtime family dispute running between his and his cousin’s families.
The Seattle mayor, nevertheless, planned to serve out the remainder of his term.
Louise Chernin with the Greater Seattle Business Association, the region’s LGBT chamber of commerce, declined to comment except to say, “This has been a hard time for our community”. He chose to do so, and I think that was the right decision. And though the earlier allegations derailed his re-election bid, which he ended in May, he had committed to finishing his current term before Tuesday.
Moon, an urban planner, said the mayor had become a distraction and a detriment to the city and that’s why she called for him to resign in May.
In recent months, he has faced growing pressure to resign as more people came forward to accuse him of sexual assault. The openly gay Democrat had previously been in the Washington Legislature.
