What is the Electoral College?
The reason the Electoral College was established, rather than just providing for the direct election of the president, was that most of the nation’s founders were actually rather afraid of democracy.
They’d have to decide soon, because the Electoral College meets in each state capital on December 19 to cast those votes.

During the Constitutional Convention, the smaller states were concerned that a system that relied on popular votes would give too much power to the large states. It’s winner-take-all in every state except ME and Nebraska.
After the presidential election, your governor prepares a “Certificate of Ascertainment” listing all of the candidates who ran for President in your state along with the names of their respective electors.
According to the National Archives, historically, 99 percent of electors have stood by their party’s vote.
Al Gore was one man who won the popular vote but lost the presidency to George W. Bush in 2000. It allows all states to have an important part in electing our leaders instead of a few.
As Alexander Hamilton writes in “The Federalist Papers”, the Constitution is created to ensure “that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications”.
