Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz won’t open party convention
Five of the nine elected delegates were women before Wasserman Schultz resigned.
The scandal has already led to Ms Wasserman Schultz announcing on Sunday that she would stand down as chairwoman of the DNC at the end of the convention, but this was not enough for Sanders supporters.
On Friday, whistleblowing website WikiLeaks released Democratic Party emails revealing the DNC head and other top staffers worked to obstruct the Sanders presidential campaign in favor of rival Hillary Clinton.
Opponents held signs saying “Emails” and similar things.
Democrats had said the convention would be more optimistic than the Republican national convention, which featured speakers warning of the dangers of terrorism and crime.
Major parties typically remain neutral until a nominee is selected, but the emails show the leadership team had one goal: make Clinton the Democratic nominee.
“Debbie is not a bad person”. Their snooty claim of party unity-as compared to the highly visible divisions in Donald Trump’s Republican Party-rings hollow. Now, it looks like Democrats will have the same struggle through the course of the week. Ensuring that Sanders supporters vote for Clinton is key to her successful election.
Sanders met with a group of his supporters this afternoon and Milwaukee State Representative Jonathan Brostoff was in that meeting. Chief among their hesitance to support the Democratic nominee is concerns over whether the primaries were conducted fairly.
“I’m really annoyed”, said MI delegate Bruce Fealk.
“Trump’s entire campaign is one more late-night Trump infomercial”, she said. Some of the emails involve tactics to smear Bernie Sanders’ election campaign.
For Clinton delegates, however, it’s time to move on. “We united behind Clinton and (Tim) Kaine”.
Miguel Valdez, a 32 year old Sanders delegate from Florida who protested loudly, told NBC News he could not be sure if Sanders supporters would protest as vigorously on the floor of the Wells Fargo Arena, where the Democratic National Convention will take place.
Ben Kamisar of The Hill provides additional details, noting that delegates repeatedly shouted ‘Shame!’ as Wasserman Schultz tried to speak.
