Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer Introduces Bill to Abolish Electoral College
Boxer described the Electoral College as an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect the modern society. If likely voters had actually turned up to vote, Clinton would have won the election and not just the popular vote.
Going to a popular vote would not be problem-free, but it would be more democratic.
In a subsequent post from that night he added “the electoral college is a disaster for a democracy” and “the phoney electoral college made a laughing stock out of our nation”.
Each state is assigned a number of electoral votes equal to its Congressional delegation.
Q. Why does the electoral college exist? He later tweeted that if that were the case, he would have campaigned differently and still beaten Clinton.
Mr Trump, busy with his transition and talks with foreign leaders, said he would have won anyway.
The real estate mogul, known as much for his business skills as for his brashness, will become the fifth person in USA history to win the presidency even though he lost the popular vote.
Over the decades there have been hundreds of attempts to change the Electoral College, including countless efforts in Congress. The last Republican to win the popular vote was George W. Bush in 2004.
Trump revised that assessment after this year’s election.
Trump also told Stahl four times during the interview that he had won the election “easily”, apparently misunderstanding that an upset victory is not the same thing as a comfortable one.
The LA Times reports that Boxer has previously sponsored legislation to repeal the Electoral College, but that those bills weren’t considered.
He calls the Electoral College’s system of mainly casting votes for president based on statewide popular votes imperfect. That job will go to Democratic Electors since the state of MA voted for Hillary Clinton. “Hillary won the popular vote”.
“I know there was a good reason and there still is a good reason that we have electors”, says Rhymes. Back when he did so in 2012, though, he had a much less favorable position on the institution.
Under the “simple votes” system referenced by Trump, Clinton would have won the presidential election. There are 538 electors. Instead, it advocates for The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which is an agreement that would have states award their electoral votes to the victor of the popular vote.
