Democrats End Gun Control Sit
That’s when House democrats took over the floor demanding action on gun control.
“If [Republicans] behave in a certain way, another sit-in is an option”, Ryan, of Howland, D-13th, said Thursday, shortly after the conclusion of the 26-hour sit-in on the House floor.
The protest drew a range of reactions from their colleagues and constituents.
Rep. Bill Huizenga represents Michigan’s 2nd District.
Dozens of Democrats spent the night in the chamber, and after a strategy meeting at midday Thursday, they made a decision to end the protest – at least for now. One that would not allow someone, on the no-fly list, to by guns and the other would be universal background checks.
Higgins believes many Republicans agree with the proposed gun reform and a vote hasn’t happened, because of concerns from Republican party leadership.
Early Thursday, after it became clear that House Democrats meant to continue their sit-in indefinitely, Ryan hastily closed down the House after 3 a.m. His action came almost 16 hours after Democrats rebelled over a lack of action on gun-control legislation by staging a 1960s-style sit-in on the House floor.
Again Democrats promise to pick up the gun control fight when the house comes back from the holiday recess on July 5.
LaMalfa stated they could have gotten more work done. It caught a lot of attention as things got testy and heated exchanges erupted.
“Once I got started with the live streaming I didn’t feel like I could let down the people who were following me”, said Takano.
“If this is not a political stunt then why are they trying to raise money off of this, off of a tragedy”, Speaker Ryan said.
Ryan should be able to recognize a political stunt, since he was part of one staged by Republicans that stopped the same chamber from carrying out the people’s business in 2008. Susan Collins (R-Me.) – which would ban a fewer suspected terrorists from buying guns than other bills – passed a procedural vote 46-52, but its future is unclear. He said it sends the wrong message to the world.
“The founding fathers 200 years ago in establishing the 2nd Amendment could not have anticipated this hell,”Higgins said”. “When we see our democracy descend in this way, it is not a good sign, it is not a good precedent”, he said.
“There’s an epidemic of gun violence in America”, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said after the chamber adjourned. “If you take out the terrorist you don’t have a gun problem, okay”.
“We’re going to win”, Lewis declared.
The many efforts at gun control have failed despite anger at mass shootings like the killings at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012 and in San Bernardino, California, last year.
How vile is it that these same House progressives who so viciously claim that the National Rifle Association (NRA) profits from terrorism so cynically attempts to exploit an attack on a gay nightclub to fatten their campaign coffers?
The delegation’s lone Republican, Rep. Steve Pearce, expressed disapproval of the tactic Wednesday afternoon on Twitter.
“It doesn’t seem to be much of a partisan issue except for in Congress”, said Zeoli, an associate professor in criminal justice at Michigan State University.
