Democrats flip 43rd state legislative seat since Trump took office

On the Republican side, Taylor easily defeated primary challenger Mary Jones, a former chairwoman of the James City County Board of Supervisors.

Heller faced a potentially strong primary challenger in Danny Tarkanian, a businessman who has run unsuccessfully for the House and Senate in Nevada before.

Several Nevada primary races were called shortly after polls closed Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

There’s still plenty at stake for both parties.

State Senator Jennifer Wexton, the apparent frontrunner and only state officeholder in the primary, was motivated to take on Trump after seeing increased turnout at her town halls after Trump took office.

In northern Virginia’s District Ten, six candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination while Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock faces Shak Hill in the primary.

November ballots for the Legislature became clearer Tuesday with the conclusion of numerous legislative primaries.

Democrats will decide between Elaine Luria and Karen Mallard. Mallard is a public school teacher and says she wants to fight President Trump’s and Secretary of Education Betsy Devos’ agenda.

In House District 13 in Old Orchard Beach, Democrat Lori Gramlich beat Jay Kelley for the right to run against Republican Sharri MacDonald in November. These victories mean that the state’s Democratic party has nominated six women to fill 11 House seats, all but one of which are now occupied by men.

“I will certainly be a check on this president if I see him or congressional Republicans planning to advance policies that are damaging to the people of the country”, she said.

In Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, an original Tea Party candidate is attempting to make a political comeback by unseating a sitting member of Congress. Ryan McAdams is a minister in Williamsburg.

Maine Attorney General Janet Mills leads the Democratic primary, but former Maine House Speaker Mark Eves, state Sen. Tim Kaine. Republican voters are choosing between Corey Stewart, Del.

Incumbent Democratic Rep. Ruben Kihuen announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election to a second term amid allegations of sexual misconduct. He enjoys high name recognition and has a hefty campaign account.

Democrats also have hopes in a few other Virginia districts.

Frostman’s win represents the 43rd state legislative seat Democrats have flipped since Trump took office in January 2017, a trend that national Democratic operatives argue shows voters are prepared to rebuke the President in November.

Republicans are looking for victories to blunt that energy and signal they’re still in control of Wisconsin politics heading into the fall.
