Democrats hold 1st presidential debate
Hillary and her supporters can wish that Hillary’s e-mail scandal would just go away, but it isn’t.
Keen to reinforce her liberal bona fides, Clinton said “I don’t take a backseat to anyone” when it comes to progressive policies.
Likewise, Martin O’Malley’s opinion doesn’t matter – since he endorsed Clinton in 2008. “I do support the use of medical marijuana, and I think even there we need to do a lot more research so that we know exactly how we’re going to help people for whom medical marijuana provides relief”.
“Well, in addition to the NRA (National Rifle Association), the health insurance companies, the drug companies, the Iranians, probably the Republicans”, Clinton said to laughter from the audience.
But Clinton received surprise respite from attacks over her use of a private email server as USA top diplomat – seen as an Achilles Heel – with Sanders and others coming to her defense. Like Sanders’ record on gun control, Clinton’s position may be rooted in her parochial interests as a former senator from New York, where many big banks are headquartered.
Does she really believe that American voters are that stupid?
Soon after, Don Lemon, brought up an issue that has plagued America for centuries and constantly tripped candidates up on the campaign trail: race. Words like “admiration”, “affection”, and “support” were thrown around, but Clinton drove home the point that she worked, arm in arm, with the sitting president, who is very popular among Democrats.
Those moves have fed lingering concerns among the Democratic party base and Sanders’ insurgent campaign.
The overwhelming media and political consensus was that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won Tuesday night’s Democratic primary debate.
The unused podium: While Vice President Biden’s name did not surface during the debate, his prospective candidacy hovers over the race.
And two other Democratic candidates, former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee and ex-Virginia Sen.
Moderator Anderson Cooper didn’t mess around when he began discussing each candidate’s electability. A question that Sen Sanders immediately responded with, “Black lives matter”.
During the debate, Clinton reiterated that she takes responsibility for her mistake, and made reference to the congressional committee investigating Benghazi and her emails, which she said was created to bring down her campaign.
Hillary Clinton came out smiling.
“Trying just to get the time just to answer the questions there were so many questions”, he said.
When asked about income inequality, he reminded viewers of where the U.S. was when former president George W. Bush left office. “I do look at what’s happening in the world. Are we better off today than we were seven years ago, absolutely”. “When I think about capitalism, I think about all the small businesses that were started because we have the opportunity and the freedom in our country for people to do that and make a good living for themselves and their families”, she said.
