Democrats outraged at governor over Flint water crisis
He says there should be “tape around the city, because Flint is a crime scene”. Critics complained about a lack of urgency from Snyder and no trained emergency response manager on the ground.
Snyder, whose office is exempt from Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act, told Fournier he is considering releasing all of his e-mails related to the Flint water crisis, as requested by the Free Press, Common Cause in MI, and other individuals and groups. Reporter: The system has been switched back to lake Huron water but the river damaged the pipe system so badly, water is still not safe to drink. A class-action lawsuit filed past year alleges the state Department of Environmental Quality didn’t treat the water for corrosion, in accordance with federal law, and because so many service lines to Flint are made of lead, the noxious element leached into the water of the city’s homes. That move, followed by other state errors, has led to a public health crisis, allegations of a state government cover-up, and Saturday’s declaration of a federal emergency in Flint by President Barack Obama.
On Monday, CBS This Morning devoted a almost three-minute-long report to Democratic presidential candidates and left-wing activists denouncing Michigan’s Republican Governor Rick Snyder over the Flint water crisis. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, called for Snyder’s resignation in a statement Saturday.
The water was later found to contain lead, and as a result thousands of Flint residents have since been exposed to the toxic chemical, many of whom are children. This year, Snyder speaks under the cloud of the contaminated Flint River and a firestorm of criticism he is facing in his home state, nationally and on the presidential campaign trail.
Gov. Rick Snyder finally acknowledged in late September that the water was unsafe, saying the consequences of switching to Flint River water were not “fully understood”.
Joining the political heavies are familiar names out of Hollywood, some of the city’s favorite sons and daughters, namely filmmaker Michael Moore, actress Sandra Bernhard and singer-actress Cher. The city has since reversed the switch, but the water is still unsafe. But officials remain concerned that old pipes could continue to leach lead, to which exposure can cause behavior problems and learning disabilities in children as well as kidney ailments in adults. He said the water contamination was intentional.
Even Cher has gotten involved – she’s teamed with Icelandic Glacial to donate over 181,000 bottles of water. “And I saw that Gov. Snyder turned around within two hours and finally asked for the help that he should have asked for some weeks ago”.
Moore participated in a rally in Flint over the weekend where he demanded Snyder’s arrest.
