Democrats stick with ‘unity’ theme on final day of DNC

I will think back to 1992, when Hillary Clinton often subbed for her husband at Washington fundraisers as he fought off primary challenges elsewhere. Having made what she says is the biggest crack yet in America’s political glass ceiling, Mrs Clinton is now poised to shatter it entirely.

Making history, the nation’s first African American president Barack Obama stood arm in arm with Clinton who would be president should she win over the voters. Everything Hillary did in this early section of the speech made her more intimidating and out of reach-Bill was impressed when she spoke to him first and asked him out, but he was also speechless. One of his fiercest declarations – “she will never quit when the going gets tough, she will never quit on you” – could not help but conjure up his history of infidelities. Finally, noticing that he was staring at her, she walked over and said, “I’m Hillary Rodham”.

“I was so impressed and surprised that, momentarily I was speechless”. He recalled how relentlessly he had pursued her, proposing to her three times before she accepted.

It has to be said that his speech was sort of spooky, given what we know of the marriage.

“I also know that with her as our Commander-in-Chief, our global relations will not be reduced to a business transaction”. Bill’s reaction? “I was so impressed and surprised that, whether you believe it or not, I was momentarily speechless”, he said, prompting laughs from the audience. More recently, his dinner with the businessman Mark Cuban and his tarmac encounter with Attorney General Loretta Lynch were reminders that when Bill Clinton has time on his hands, he can create unsafe distractions for his wife. When they married in 1975, “I was still in awe after more than four years of being around her at how smart and strong and loving and caring she was”, he said.

“She’s been there for us, even if we haven’t always noticed”, he said.

“Your children and grandchildren will bless you forever if you do”.

Amid charges by Republicans that the optimistic mood of the Democratic convention has ignored the threat from ISIS and Islamic terrorism, Clinton will be specific about the global national security threats that loom.

Hillary Clinton fan or not, most people would acknowledge that Tuesday was her Day.

Mrs Clinton instead appeared by video link to thank delegates for their suppor.
