Democrats’ Task: Rebuild the Blue Political Wall in Midwest
That story is replicated in state after state with different groups.
According to the Hamilton Electors website, the electors are honoring “Alexander Hamilton’s vision that the Electoral College should, when necessary, act as a Constitutional fail-safe against those lacking the qualifications from becoming President”.
Twenty-nine states have laws on their books saying a national elector must cast his or her vote for the presidential contender who won their state. But the lawyers argue such laws are unconstitutional. An electoral system that gives priority to where one happens to live in determining the presidency should have been discarded long ago. He won Wisconsin by 27,257 votes and he won Pennsylvania by 68,236 votes. Based on their population, Washington and Colorado are given 12 and nine electors, respectively.
No question, elections by popular vote would not be flawless either, but to imply the Electoral College is fair and equitable for all citizens and all states is beyond a stretch.
As so often is the case with guarantees of liberty written into the Constitution, the founders were absolutely right on the Electoral College. Trump also won Wisconsin, carried by Democrats in seven straight tries, and Iowa, carried just once by a Republican over the same period.
Kobach is one of the nation’s foremost advocates for adding more requirements for people to vote or register to vote.
Despite his self-proclaimed “impeccable reasoning”, his defense of the Electoral College has some flaws.
“Hillary won this election, and when the votes are all counted, by what will likely be more than a million votes”, Dukakis wrote to Politico.
The Electoral College also makes sure that presidential candidates don’t spend all their time in the most populated areas of the country.
The Electoral College has other advantages.
Colorado, likely one of the first states that will face a potential lawsuit challenging its state law that binds electors to the state’s popular victor, has nine electors. Unlike extremist political tyro Trump, Clinton was exceptionally qualified, used socially-unifying rhetoric, possessed a controlled temperament, and advocated an agenda of social liberalism and globalization that should have appealed to an America that had the social conscience, eight years earlier, to elect its first black President, Barack Obama.
Trump’s election is another chance to try and fix a key worldwide relationship.
“I don’t think it’s normalizing his behavior”, said first-year Kendra Guzmán. Trump spokesman Jason Miller declined to say at a Monday news briefing whether the president-elect’s Justice Department would ask state or federal law enforcement to investigate allegations of illegal voting but said there is “concern that so many have voted who were not legally supposed to”.
“We understand all of the risks involved in them coming forward”. At this point, it is being reported that so far six have said they will. “As a group, they have much more experience funding political candidates than they do running government agencies”.
The Democratic Party is seen by ordinary, working people as “caring about the cultural, managerial and professional elite”, she said, “not about them”.
Berkman does not see the Electoral College going away anytime soon, chiefly because the party in power wants to maintain that power, Berkman said.
Trump has said since the election that he will not pursue an investigation into the former secretary of state’s private email server. O’Neil for Creative Commons on Flickr.
