Democrats to give Trump ‘rude awakening’ in summer onslaught
Iowa Democrats solidified their support for Hillary Clinton as their presidential nominee, but questions remained after their state convention Saturday whether and how quickly Bernie Sanders’ supporters join her campaign. Compared with recent GOP presidential contenders, Trump rates consistently worse than George W. Bush in 2004, John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012.
Though down in the delegate count, Sanders remains in the presidential race.
The internal research file compiled by the Democratic Party on Republican nominee Donald Trump was recently hacked, reportedly by Russian intelligence. There were 321 delegates for Clinton and 453 for Sanders.
Trump said reports of new efforts to stop him from gaining the GOP nomination, even though he has more than enough delegates to claim a majority, are “a hoax” concocted by the news media.
Sanders most high-profile backers in Congress are also migrating to Clinton, including Oregon Sen. He said denying him the nomination would be illegal. The small but passionate group brainstormed how to push Sanders’ candidacy at the Democratic National Convention next month in Philadelphia.
“To advance the goals that so resonated in Bernie Sander’s campaign, we need Hillary Clinton to win this election”, Sen. He cited “voter suppression” and irregularities in states like New York, Arizona and Kentucky. “We’ll keep doing it, because we do have tremendous support within the party that I can tell you”, Trump said. “Until the superdelegates vote, it’s not over”, she said, adding Clinton “needs to make real concessions” and adopt key pieces of Sanders’ platform to win over his supporters.
Her positive rating with Republicans in the new Wisconsin poll – 3.6% – is nearly as low as Trump’s rating with Democrats.
The message warned Trump’s supporters that Clinton was about to “invade” their television screens with ads attacking their preferred candidate, but assured them that his team was preparing to “fight back”. (Democratic reaction to Trump’s controversial comments on the Orlando massacre do not factor into that decline, since the poll was done largely before the attack).
“You don’t go into somebody else’s house and start rearranging the furniture to your liking”, she said. “It’s a hoax, I’m telling you”. Though the primaries are over Sanders has not dropped out and endorsed Clinton.
For now, Welch said Sanders is well-positioned to cement his position within the party by helping with down-ballot races, and perhaps more power in the Senate.
Clinton leads Trump 47 percent to 40 percent among registered voters, and by eight points – 49 percent to 41 percent – among likely voters. “I beat everybody. But I don’t mean beat – I beat the hell out of them”, he said. “We need to unite all Democrats because we’re all built on the same ideals and we have the same beliefs and values and passions”.
The final day of the Democratic National Convention Committee’s forum centered on how to attract supporters and appeal to their interests. Sixty-seven delegates previously were elected at the party’s May congressional caucuses. Clinton and Sanders had sizable factions on the floor of the Alamodome and a mention of either would rouse their followers.
