Denver Broncos cut Mark Sanchez, keep entire eight-player draft class
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer (3), Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian (13) and Broncos’ Mark Sanchez (6) meet after an NFL preseason football game, Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, in Glendale, Ariz.
The Broncos ended up selecting Paxton Lynch in the draft, but still, Sanchez was seen as the frontrunner given his experience with the Jets and Eagles, which included 72 starts. I ” m just trying to be the best man I can be every day, best teammate, and take it from there”, said Trevor Siemian, Denver Broncos starting quarterback. Minnesota may have been one of them but the Vikings made a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire Sam Bradford, who Sanchez backed up previous year in Philadelphia.
Heading into training camp, Mark Sanchez was expected to be the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback this season. While there is much debate on whether Tony Romo is ultimately moved to IR, the team was definitely in the market for a veteran presence behind Dak Prescott. Denver is returning with much of the same defense that was ranked number one in the National Football League for yards allowed per game in 2015 and single handedly dragged Peyton Manning to his second Super Bowl win. The Broncos cut Sanchez after failing to find a trade partner. But Sanchez struggled in the preseason and was ultimately beat out by Siemian.
Cutting Sanchez avoids the seventh-round pick that the Broncos would owe the Eagles, along with $3.5 million in base salary beyond the $1 million that is fully guaranteed.
And, now, amazingly, he is the quarterback who is succeeding Peyton Manning in Denver and taking over a team that won the Super Bowl a year ago.
“I don’t know if it’s ever going to hit me that I’m playing for my favorite team growing up or playing for America’s Team”, Presscot stated to Dallas Morning News. Broncos coach Gary Kubiak wants to get Lynch a look from start to finish, and with players with whom he has familiarity from taking second- and third-team snaps the past three weeks. Sanchez has recorded 15,126 yards, 86 touchdowns and 84 interceptions in his seven year career.
