Denver Broncos Rumors: Peyton Manning Benched For Brock Osweiler, Ronnie
Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning may have had one of the worst performances of his career on Sunday, but he did so etching his name in history.
Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak announced on Monday that Peyton Manning will be inactive against the Chicago Bears on Sunday. With Peyton Manning suffering a multitude of injuries, most recently a plantar fascia tear, Osweiler figures to see an increased workload from week 11 and beyond.
Veteran Peyton Manning, 39, was benched in Week 10 after completing five passes to his own team and four to the opposing team on 20 attempts.
Denver Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler (17) throws during the second half of an NFL football game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015, in Denver. On Saturday, the Broncos updated their injury report to add a sore rib cage to the growing list of ailments for Manning.
So for the first time, Manning has been taken out of the lineup in the middle of a season. “I know that’s the best decision for him, to get him back and healthy, and we need to know where we’re heading this week”.
Longtime backup Brock Osweiler finished up.
Ironically, the humiliating honour of being benched for Osweiler came in the same game Manning passed Favre to become the NFL’s all-time passing yards leader. Or practice. Or even dress in the Broncos’ game Sunday against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
“I just think it’s the grind of the season, a bunch of bumps and bruises and obviously the shoulder, the foot bothering him coming out of Indianapolis and had some rib issues”, Kubiak said. The Broncos, with a defense that had been dominating before stubbing its toe against the Colts and Chiefs, have reached 7-2 despite Manning. “I had some underthrows to some guys, so I wish I would have played better”. “I’m disappointed about the game [Sunday], but I’m going to try to take advantage of this week and try to get to feeling better and getting healthy, and we’ll see where everything stands next week”. Regardless, Manning and Tom Brady both always said they would, “Play til we suck”. Manning totaled 35 yards in the 29-13 loss to Kansas City. While some of the fanfare is lost without Manning, John Fox still welcomes in his former team and you can bet that an already confident, motivated Bears team will have extra pep in their step to win this game for their coach. The New York Giants quarterback said he talked to his older brother about the injury last week but hadn’t spoken with Peyton since Sunday’s game. “He’s been extremely supportive of me since Day 1, he’s taught me so many things”.
Osweiler admitted the announcement caught him a bit off guard.
I’m not talking about Manning’s legendary career as a quarterback here, though I guess that might come in handy at some point. If he can’t perform with his arm, he’s got to do it in the marketing game, where he’s still number one (as much as Luke McCown has been challenging him this season).
