Deputy fatally shot by patient he was guarding at St. Cloud Hospital
A suspect being treated at St. Cloud Hospital fatally shot a sheriff’s deputy early Sunday morning, officials said Sunday, noting the suspect also died. The deputy was shot around 5:15 a.m. Security personnel subdued the suspect, who later died, according to the BCA. St. Cloud Hospital is a Catholic-affiliated, not-for-profit institution and is part of the CentraCare Health System.
Officials have not released the identities of the suspect or the deputy, or said if they know how the inmate got a gun.
The incident was limited to the suspect’s room and no other hospital staff or patients were injured according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
The deputy, who is from outside the St. Cloud tri-county area, was monitoring the patient’s welfare, but it’s unclear why the patient was being hospitalized.
A news conference was scheduled by the BCA for Sunday afternoon, when more details are expected.
The names of the deputy, and the suspect, who were killed have not been released.
