Deputy shoots, kills man in Lynwood
The Los Angeles County sheriff’s department confirmed that the 28-year-old father-of-three was shot and died at the scene.
Police responded by opening fire at the man. In the video, the officers continue firing as the suspect is on the ground, attempting to crawl away.
Two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies have shot and killed an armed suspect in a shooting captured on video that appears to show a man being hit with gunfire as he walked away from the deputies.
Deputies in southern California shot dead an armed black man who refused to drop his weapon, according to law enforcement authorities, but a video posted online by local media appeared to show him crawling away from the officers as they shot him.
The sheriff of LA county, Jim McDonnell, said in a statement: “I want to assure the public that the sheriff’s department takes deputy involved shootings very seriously and that this investigation will be handled with the utmost professionalism and integrity”. Police recovered a. 45 caliber handgun that was loaded.
Hernandez added that at one point the suspect actively fired his gun into the air, refusing to comply with “several commands” to drop his gun.
Lt Hernandez told KABC-TV that his department was aware of the 29-second video purporting to show the shooting, which was sent to TV stations.
It’s unclear if there any people directly in front of Robertson as he walked away.
Hernandez acknowledged the existence of the video and described the footage as “just one piece of evidence… that’ll be analyzed against the physical evidence, the witness statements and the deputies’ statements”.
However, despite the video and the family’s outrage, Seth Stoughton, a criminal law professor at the University of SC, says this case isn’t as open and shut as some may think.
The Sheriff’s Department said it would hold a press conference on Sunday to discuss the shooting.
Within hours of the shooting protesters gathered at the scene of the shooting and began chanting “no justice, no peace” at officers.
