Derek Carrier to Redskins
A few days after the San Francisco 49ers traded Asante Cleveland to the New England Patriots for offensive lineman Jordan Devey, Matt Barrows is hearing the team has dealt Derek Carrier to Washington for a fifth round draft pick. Appearing in 11 games last year, Carrier recorded nine catches for 105 yards, the only receiving action he’s seen in a three-year career.
The move comes as team officials continue to try to improve their tight end position following the season-ending losses of Niles Paul (fractured and dislocated left ankle) and Logan Paulsen (torn ligament in his right big toe).
The 6-foot-4, 241-pound Carrier was then waived by Philadelphia August . 25 2013 and subsequently was signed to San Francisco’s practice squad November . 3, 2013.
The 49ers and Washington announced the agreement of the trade, which is pending a physical. At the time Carrier, who played wide receiver in college, was viewed as a possible replacement for Vernon Davis in terms of his ability to make plays deep down field.
And Reed has been hampered by a hamstring injury.
Two of those five, along with Reed, will most likely end up making Washington’s final 53-man roster.
Hamm started on Thursday and had a catch for 23 yards.
Carrier entered the NFL as a college free agent with the Oakland Raiders on May 11, 2012.
The Sacramento Bee reported that the pick was a fifth-rounder in 2017 and conditional based on Carrier’s playing time and production. The Redskins signed two free agents last week in D.J.
The 49ers entered training camp with eight tight ends, and clearly was not going to be keeping all of them.
