Despite the discouraging opening, Watson instantly responded, pioneering a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on Clemson’s subsequent possession while capping it off with a game-tying touchdown rush from four yards out. He surpassed that and then a few against Boston College on Saturday.
Boston College was able to strike first in the ballgame, however, with an interception of Watson by defensive back Justin Simmons setting up a five-yard touchdown connection between Smith and wideout Bobby Wolford to provide the Eagles with an early 7-0 lead.
Scott had 10 catches for 162 yards as Clemson put up 532 yards on an Eagles defense that was only allowing 140 a game coming in to lead the Football Bowl Subdivision. In receiving, Charlie Callinan had 42 yards in two receptions.
Linebacker Steven Daniels had the other right before halftime, leading to Mike Knoll’s 21-yard field goal that drew the Eagles to within 17-10 at the half.
Watson hit touchdown throws of 21 yards to Zac Brooks, 6 yards to Jordan Leggett and a spectacular, high-arching ball to Artavis Scott from 51 yards out – and all against the best statistical defense in the country.
