Designer Alexander Wang to leave Balenciaga
Wang’s tenure at the helm has been relatively short-lived compared to the career of his predecessor, Nicholas Ghesquiere, who enjoyed 15 years in the creative director chair.
A spokesperson for Kering said: “There are discussions between the designer and Balenciaga regarding the renewal of the contract”.
Balenciaga is also reportedly looking for Wang’s successor.
The minimalist designer’s future has been the subject of speculation since earlier this month, when WWD reported Kering’s chief financial officer Jean-Marc Duplaix told journalists there were “ongoing discussions” about his contract.
While the fashion scene will surely miss Mr. Wang as an global influence, they are also having a grand old time speculating who his replacement will be.
Wang’s departure is not the only change Balenciaga faces. Ten of those doors were added in 2014.
Although Wang has put his stamp on the brand since joining, WWD claims his Paris Fashion Week show in late 2016 will be his last, as Balenciaga and parent company Kering will not be renewing his paperwork. Advertising campaigns paired Kate Moss with Lara Stone for womenswear, and landed musician Sam Smith his first fashion campaign as the recent face of the brand’s menswear. It’s a move that could indicate what’s ahead for Balenciaga. The appointment puts her directly in charge of Balenciaga, as well as Stella McCartney, Tomas Maier, Christopher Kane, Brioni and Alexander McQueen. “Nevertheless, it is important to see who will be the new creative director appointed”, Bernstein luxury goods analyst Mario Ortelli said.
