Despite reports Texas fired Charlie Strong, school says no decision yet
The Longhorns are about to embark on what is poised to be an awkward and unusual game week as they prepare for a season-finale on Friday at home against TCU.
The Longhorns are 5-6 in Strong’s third season.
The Houston head coach was rumored to be a top target if Strong stumbled this season.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Texas coach Charlie Strong walked slowly off the turf at Memorial Stadium, swimming upstream against thousands of Kansas fans trying to join the jubilant celebration at midfield.
Charlie Strong’s time in Austin is running short, and we’re of the opinion that it doesn’t matter if his team finishes bowl eligible.
The report comes after Scout confirmed that Texas officials were going to meet with Strong either Sunday or Monday. Will Texas be sorry for letting him go? “Everyone is disappointed. We wanted to come out”.
While its noble that Perrin and Fenves want to protect their players, the ones on the field shoulder some of the responsibility, too.
Strong installed himself as defensive coordinator this season, and while there was some improvement on that side of the ball, the Longhorns weren’t able to put together complete games and capitalize on the big rushing output of D’Onta Foreman.
“No, I don’t. No idea”, Strong said.
The Longhorns (5-6) lost 24-21 at Kansas (2-9) on Saturday.
“It will happen for sure. The question is when”, a source told the Statesman.
“So, this same guy said to me, ‘Look, you may not have followed everything about Texas that closely.’ And I said, ‘No, I haven’t followed the program the way you have, but I’ve seen them play.’ And so he says, ‘You’re gonna have a lot of work to do there”. Well discuss where things stand after that, Perrin said.
Quarterback Joel Lanning tied a school record with five rushing touchdowns, Jacob Park threw for 285 yards and two TDs, and Iowa State clobbered Texas Tech in Ames, Iowa. “No talking”, he said.
Strong took over as the Longhorns’ head coach in 2014 and has a 16-20 record in just under three full seasons. In the three years he’s coached, he has the lowest winning percentage of any coach in the school’s history.
However, an official announcement from the Longhorns has not been made. With a salary north of $5 million per season, making him one of college football’s 10 highest-paid coaches, expectations for Strong at a tradition-rich program like Texas were far beyond mere bowl eligibility.
“This one hurts, ” Texas wide receiver Jacore Warrick said.
Strong appeared to know the end was near after Saturday’s loss. Asked whether he knew what Saturday’s loss meant for his future, Strong replied: “No, I don’t”. Men’s athletic director Mike Perrin declined to speak to reporters afterward.
