Details About VH1 Classic’s Rebranding & New Lineup — MTV Classic Launch
Rolling Stone reported that Monday’s launch date, August 1, has significance as it’s the day MTV launched in 1981.
According to the announcement, MTV Classic will be the home for vintage series and music programming taken from MTV history, with particular attention to shows from the 1990s and 2000s. Erik Flannigan, MTV’s executive vice-president of music and events strategy and development, told Vulture that fans can expect reruns of Wonder Showzen, MTV Cribs, Beavis and Butt-head, Laguna Beach, and Clone High.
The channel will launch on August 1, which will also mark the 35th anniversary of MTV’s 1981 debut. They may not have had Snapchat in the ’80s, but they definitely had drama. Beavis and Butt-Head, Daria and Aeon Flux will all be making their returns to primetime on the new network.
Moving forward, MTV Classic has programmed primetime blocks “from the vault” for Mondays through Thursdays from 10 p.m.to 1 a.m., with numerous aforementioned programs.
MTV may be a tad different today than it was when it debuted almost 35 years ago… but that’s all about to change thanks to MTV Classic! From there, you’ll be able to catch a TOTAL REQUEST LIVE retrospective, followed by a best-of run of MTV UNPLUGGED.
For anyone looking for more of the reality shows that MTV became known for, the weekends will bring marathons of The Real World, Laguna Beach, Road Rules and other hit programs. Throughout, movies, concerts and music videos from the past will be shown. MTV Classic plans to have theme nights of prime-time programming built around the aforementioned series, as well as Pimp My Ride, Jackass, and Run’s House.
