Details only deepen mystery surrounding Kalamazoo shootings
On Sunday, Uber confirmed that the man suspected of going on a shooting rampage that left six people dead and two others seriously wounded in MI was one of its drivers, reports The New York Times.
Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting says 45-year-old Jason Dalton of Kalamazoo County likely will face multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder when he appears before a judge in a Kalamazoo County courtroom.
Dalton, who had been driving for Uber for less than a month, was charged Monday with killing six people in the Kalamazoo, Michigan area.
Two hours after the final shooting, police arrested Dalton, 45, without incident in downtown Kalamazoo. Dalton was denied bail, and his next court appearance is expected to be a preliminary examination set for March 3.
As authorities pieced together Jason Dalton’s actions, the prosecutor said he picked up Uber fares after the first shooting and probably got more riders after the subsequent shootings.
The Dalton family said in a statement: “There are no words which can express our shock and disbelief, and we are devastated and saddened for the victims and the families of the victims”, Michigan State Police said the shooting began at about 5:30 p.m. (2230 GMT) on Saturday with a woman wounded outside an apartment building. That’s where police say four women were killed after two vehicles – a Chevrolet Cruze and an Oldsmobile Silhouette minivan – were fired upon. He said Dalton called Carruthers by a different name only “to get her attention” before opening fire. He expects some answers will emerge in court but doubts they will be satisfying. About a mile into the trip, Dalton got a phone call, and when he hung up, he began driving erratically, Mellen said.
“My grandma she does it. She’s an Uber driver”, Murray said. The “SOS” panic button within the Uber app in India sends an alert to law enforcement with passenger and driver info and their Global Positioning System locations so police can track the ride.
“I think firearms are only risky as the people who carry them”, Guevara said.
There have been no apparent connections found between the alleged shooter and his victims nor between the victims with each other.
Joe Sullivan, the company’s chief security officer, said the company’s system for investigating whether drivers have criminal histories was thorough. He also admitted to being at the scene of a shooting at 10:24 p.m.at a Cracker Barrel restaurant a few miles from there, where four women were killed and a 14-year-old girl was critically injured.
A federal agent says many long guns and handguns were seized from the home of the man charged with killing six people in western MI. While in the store, Dalton joked with the store manager and gave him a one-armed hug, Southwick said.
