“The shooting at UCC showed what unbelievable character your police officers have and how they are willing to risk their lives for our community”, Burge said.
“I want everyone to know of the selfless acts of these officers”, said the district attorney, adding that the detectives were not wearing bulletproof vests.
The Oregon State Police has concluded its investigation into the actions from law enforcement officers at last week’s Umpqua Community College shooting, and it has been determined that the two officers who fired their weapons were justified.
Harper-Mercer went back into a classroom shot and killed himself shortly after the detective shot him, Wesenberg said. The victims included his classmates in a writing class and the instructor. The detectives, about 15 yards away, returned fire, missing twice but hitting Harper-Mercer once, Wesenberg said.
Detective Todd Spingath is a United States Air Force veteran and has been employed with the Roseburg Police Department for 16 years.
A press conference with more information on the officer-involved shooting is scheduled for today at 10 a.m. Two of their bullets hit a wall.
The detectives weren’t the only people to reportedly challenge Harper-Mercer.
“Sergeant Kaney and Detective Spingath were in plain clothes”, Wesenberg said.
The attack in this rural timber town was the worst mass shooting in Oregon history. One firefighter lost a son and a paramedic lost a niece in the massacre that left a teacher and eight students dead and nine others wounded. At the same time, Douglas County commissioners offered a message of welcome to President Obama, who will visit with victims’ families on Friday.
Investigators have not yet shared any motive for the killings.
They were airlifted to the hospital about 70 miles north of Roseburg.
