Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah placed on IR
Ameer Abdullah, who began the season as Detroit’s top running back, was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a left foot injury, leaving his availability for the rest of the 2016 campaign in question.
Some have reported that Abdullah is out for the season, but that is not the case.
Until Ameer Abdullah was hurt last week, though, Riddick hadn’t carried the ball more than seven times in a game. Washington has six carries for 32 yards and a touchdown in the Lions’ first two games.
Detroit had improved from the worst rushing offense in the league a season ago to the ninth-best this year.
The injured-reserve designation will keep Abdullah out for at least the next eight weeks.
“You lose a dynamic playmaker”, Detroit running back Zach Zenner said.
The 5-foot-9, 201-pound Riddick had a career-high 11 carries for 37 yards against the Titans and caught four passes for 28 yards. However, if the Lions decide to forego the signing, the team could get by with rookie Dwayne Washington as their second-string back, considering he has taken on more and more responsibilities each week.
The Lions will look to running back Theo Riddick as the temporary starter for now and have signed former New England Patriots wide receiver Aaron Dobson to replace Abdullah’s spot on the active roster while he is on the IR.
Abdullah exited Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans, gingerly walking off of the field.
