Detroit Pistons agree to sign Aron Baynes
Free agent center Aron Baynes is moving on from San Antonio and reportedly set to join the Detroit Pistons. Project Spurs can also confirm that Baynes is on his way to Detroit.
National Basteball Association Australia spoke exclusively to Baynes about his new deal with the Pistons.
Baynes has seen his role increase in each of his first three years in the league, averaging 6.6 points per game in 16 minutes a night in 2015.
“I can’t wait to work with the great coaches and players already at the club. We are going to surprise some people”. Sports Illustrated’s Rob Mahoney rated the deal a “C-“. If Stan Van Gundy can figure out a way to use all these guys effectively, Baynes would be a good option off the bench to relieve Drummond and keep production at a high level. “Baynes is a fine basketball player deserving of an National Basteball Association contract – just not this contract”, Mahoney wrote. This is a small deal in the context of all the money flying around this summer.
Baynes becomes the second big man to leave the Spurs, with Tiago Splitter being sent to the Atlanta Hawks via trade earlier in the week.
The Spurs are pursuing the marquee free agent LaMarcus Aldridge, who is expected to not return to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Although financial details were not immediately known, ESPN.com reported Baynes’ deal could be worth as much as $20 million over three years.
