Detroit police plan to use body cameras for all officers
Body cameras will become standard equipment for all Detroit police officers over the next several years. The dash cameras are already in the budget for the department, and the body cameras will be paid for by federal grants and the department.
Mark Diaz, president of the Detroit Police Officers Association, also is expected to attend along with members of the City Council and Board of Police Commissioners. Over the next 12 months, each of the 409 units will get fully functioning cameras.
The office of Mayor Mike Duggan says in a statement that details will be announced Tuesday afternoon along with plans to ensure that all patrol cars have working dash cameras. He says the department is building an integrated system between the two devices.
No bigger than a lipstick tube, the cameras are meant to record an officer’s-eye view at all times.
In March, Duggan and Craig announced a test run of body cameras.
Beginning next year, body cameras will be outfitted to 100 officers each month. You have (lawyers) who will now put every action by cops under a microscope to defend his thug clients.
