Device explodes on NYC subway platform: Cops
A loud explosion rocked the busy pedestrian passageway connecting the Port Authority Bus Terminal with New York City’s IND and IRT subway lines around 7:20 a.m. Monday.
Elrana Peralta, a customer service worker for Greyhound, said she works in the Port Authority terminal complex near where the blast happened, but didn’t hear the explosion.
Through the smoke, the suspect is then seen sprawled on the ground as bystanders flee.
The official NY charges against Akayed Ullah, a Bangladeshi national who has lived in Brooklyn since immigrating to the states on a family visa in 2011, come about 24 hours after he allegedly exploded the device in an ISIS-inspired attack.
Police could provide little else at this stage about Ullah’s early life in Bangladesh.
New York Police officials said Akayed was inspired by militant group ISIS to conduct the bombing.
“He’s somewhat characteristic of what we’ve been seeing across the world. somebody who turns up one day out of the blue”, Miller said. According to Taxi and Limousine Commission, Ullah held a Taxi and Limousine Commission license from March 2012 to March 2015.
“This, along with all of the [White House’s] other immigration policies, feel like an attack on immigrants and communities of color, and an attempt to keep the numbers of people of color down in the United States”, said Essaheb.
According to the police, Akayed got married in Jigatala three years ago.
“So far, his name is not on our wide-range list of radicalized persons or members of terror groups, both from Bangladesh and outside”, senior counter-terrorism police officer Sanwar Hossain told Agence France-Presse.
Ullah’s low-tech bomb used explosive powder, a nine-volt battery, a Christmas light and matches, the officials said.
It is captioned with the chilling threat: “We meet at Christmas in NY… soon”.
“It was two distinct explosions seconds from each other”, Francisco Ramirez told CNN.
“Fortunately for us, the bomb partially detonated”, he said. “It did not fully have the effect that he was hoping for”.
NY state Governor Andrew Cuomo sounded relieved when he told reporters that just three other people had been slightly hurt in the attack. “We are working closely with officials in law enforcement in the wake of this event”. Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole and Executive Director Rick Cotton praised the actions of the four officers.
Bangladesh condemned Monday’s incident in NY which is seen as an attempted terror attack.
“I am determined to improve our immigration system to put our country and our people first”. Some exits and transfers may be blocked so passengers may be affected.
The White House offered no evidence about where the suspect was radicalized or whether there were any red flags in his record.
Three people were slightly injured after the attacker’s pipe bomb exploded only partially, while the suspect was sent to a hospital with apparently severe burns and wounds on his torso and hands.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said his state’s law enforcement officials are coordinating with their federal and NY counterparts, and he directed New Jersey police to step up security at major transportation hubs.
