Devils’ Sergey Kalinin: Collects goal, assist Thursday
Devils goaltender Cory Schneider appeared ready for all of it. He stopped 27 of 29 shots, extending his streak to six consecutive games of limiting opponents to two goals or fewer.
It’s also not bad when you’re 2-0 against the champion Blackhawks. “We haven’t seen them this year at home, but obviously they’re a great team”, Devils coach John Hynes said. It extended his point streak to 11 games (eight goals, 11 assists in those games), just one shy of his career high set in 2013-14.
He opened the scoring late in the first period on Thursday night on the power play. Now they’ve dropped five of their last seven games.
MAPLE LEAFS 2, PREDATORS 1, SO: In Nashville, Tennessee, Peter Holland scored the only goal in a five-round shootout to give Toronto the win. Henrique carried the puck into the offensive zone and surprised Crawford with a rising wrist shot for his team-leading eighth goal.
Palmieri slipped behind Chicago’s confused defense, streaked to the net and popped in a loose rebound from the edge of the crease with 2:59 left in the period to put New Jersey ahead.
Panarin tied it with his third goal in two games moments after Crawford made a point-blank pad save on Mike Cammalleri. Panarin finished Chicago’s rush by beating Schneider with a quick shot high on the stick side. Panarin had 3 points (2 goals) and Kane had four points (1 goal). The Blackhawks will have a lot of decisions to make when Duncan Keith and Michal Rozsival make it back to the roster, so it’s interesting how Stan Bowman plays the salary cap number day in and day out this season. Relying on the second line to generate the scoring has worked in a few games this season, like Sunday’s victory over the Oilers. Blackhawks F Ryan Garbutt missed his second game win an undisclosed illness…. New Jersey RW Jiri Tlusty and D Eric Gelinas were healthy scratches….
NOTES: Chicago RW Brandon Mashinter made his season debut a day after he was recalled from Rockford of the American Hockey League.
