DiCaprio comments on his lack of Oscars
“The Revenant”, about a fur trapper mauled by a bear and left for dead by his companions, brought nominations for DiCaprio, who has never won an Oscar, and supporting actor for Tom Hardy.
Competing against these two films for Best Picture are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, The Martian, Room, Spotlight.
“Sylvester Stallone, 39 years after his acting nomination for Rocky”, was nominated again – for Creed, in which he plays the same character, Rocky Balboa.
Speaking after yesterday’s announcement, Boone Isaacs – who became the first African American to take over the presidency of the Academy in 2013 – said of the organisation’s diversity attempts: “we have got to speed it up”.
Meanwhile, Lottie pointed out that “I’ve just watched this film and was blown away by his acting I thought his facial expressions said it all and he looked like he was in real pain”. Next came “The Martian”, with seven nods, although its director, Ridley Scott, was prominently snubbed. Blanchett was nominated for lesbian romance “Carol”, although the movie was overlooked for best picture. The Revenant also leads the pack with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Costume Design.
In terms of the major awards, I think we’ll see a true fight between the biggest movies of a year ago. While he is being rooted by many celebrities and news outlets, as well as experts in the field, the competition is very interesting with Matt Damon (“The Martian”), Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), and Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”) in the list.
In the best actress category, previous Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence return to the race this year. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is nominated for Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and that classic John Williams score. It’s his 50th nomination, extending his record as the most-nominated person alive. It did get a surprise nomination in Best Original Screenplay, however. Eight movies will be vying for the top prize of best picture, including the oddsmakers’ favorite Spotlight.
This year’s Oscars take place on February 28 and will be hosted by Chris Rock.
