Didier Drogba to the rescue, set for Chelsea return
‘We understand his attachment, but our objective is to have him back for another season’.
The Daily Telegraph revealed last Friday that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wanted to employ Drogba, either in Hiddink’s backroom staff or as a club ambassador.
According to the Watford boss, the departure of Jose Mourinho – and subsequent hiring of Hiddink – makes it hard to assess exactly how the floundering champions will line up at Stamford Bridge this weekend.
“Mathematically it is possible, if you can add up then it is possible but this league is very strong”, said Hiddink. He has demanded desire from his players.
In fact, former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp reckons Terry could even replace Guus Hiddink in the dugout next summer. It’s hard to judge why they weren’t performing in the past.
“The players have a profound obligation to perform”, he said. Massimiliano Allegri and Antonio Conte are now the back-up options, but both of the Italians would represent a big risk as they have never worked outside of their native country. They must have the heart full of the desire of an amateur. I have a very good relationship with him, he is a very nice man. There must be desire to play. We have only spoken about until the end of the season.
The news of Guus Hiddink taking the reigns for a second spell as interim basis would have pleased the majority of Chelsea fans, with the club having won the Fa cup under the Dutchman in his initial spell in 2011. “That’s not to do with me”, Hiddink said.
“First we said let’s go to mid-May”. I will see what will happen. That means things are not going as well as foreseen. But, anyhow, I am glad to be back.
Didier Drogba moved a step closer to joining Chelsea for a third time after the Ivorian’s club Montreal Impact confirmed talks had begun with the Premier League champions over the release of the 37-year-old.
After joining Impact in July, Drogba netted 12 goals in as many starts as his side reached the semi-finals of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Hiddink reiterated his admiration for Drogba, but insisted the club’s board would handle any extra back-room recruits. “The only thing is that in this moment he is playing in Montreal”. And he can be a key player here.
