Dimitri Payet: West Ham agree fee to sell France global to Marseille
After helping France to reach the final of Euro 2016, Payet has scored just three goals for West Ham this season.
It is understood Payet took a 31,000 dollars wage cut from his 156,000 dollars-a-week salary at West Ham to secure the switch.
“Snake” and “spineless” were two of the kinder comments that came his way as he tweeted a picture of plane with the caption: “I’m going back home”.
He did also reserve a moment to comment on his “good memories” of West Ham fans.
The 29-year-old has been involved in a transfer saga throughout January after refusing to play for the Hammers, but he finally completed a move away from the London Stadium on Sunday.
Twelve months ago, Payet signed a five-year West Ham contract worth £125,000 a week.
In a statement released after Payet’s exit was confirmed, Irons joint-chairman David Sullivan expressed his disappointment at his former stars’ conduct.
Payet’s sale has proven to be extremely profitable for West Ham, however, as they more than doubled their money with the £25m sale back to the Ligue 1 club who sold him.
Sullivan said Payet had been allowed to leave “in the interests of squad unity”, adding that the club considered denying his request to leave “in order to make an example of him”.
His photograph outside the ground had to be guarded by a steward at home matches and the fans normal laudatory chant of him was replaced by abuse terms.
Under the new ownership of Frank McCourt, Marseille have signed the likes of Patrice Evra and Morgan Sanson.
Ex-Roma head coach Rudi Garcia replaced interim boss Franck Passi and France worldwide Patrice Evra arrived from Italian champions Juventus, with Marseille sixth in Ligue 1 after 22 rounds.
