Diners leave waitress no tip, write ‘LOL’ on the receipt
20-year-old Rutgers University student Jess Jones from Belmar, New Jersey was waiting on a table of eight people last week.
“With that said: Please be good to your waiters”, Jones wrote.
Beside the “LOL” was a note explaining their reasoning, reading simply: “1 Hour For food”.
Next to the “LOL” on the expensive bill with no tip was ‘one hour for food, ‘ as an explanation as to why the large party refused to tip Jones.
The following day, Jones took to her Facebook page to lament about the indignity, where she also posted a photo of the receipt (blurring out any personal information belonging to the offending patrons).
Tipped servers in New Jersey typically make under $5.00 an hour, and supplement the bulk of their income with tips. After they paid their $112.03 bill, they not only left zero tip for Jess, but they wrote a taunting note on the receipt. In her case, she said her hourly pay is just $2.50.
“They were unfriendly towards me from the first moment I greeted them.”
Jones claims she spoke with her customers and informed them the kitchen was busier than usual and she refilled their drinks in a timely manner. Next time, just leave no tip or ask to speak to the manager if your experience wasn’t great. “But waiters are mere messengers most of the time, and it’s wrong to shoot them, however bad the news”. In the space for a tip, the diner apparently wrote, “LOL”.
Over 6,800 people have shared her photo and 72 have commented, and the story is getting picked up by news outlets like Philly.com, the Asbury Park Press, and its parent publication USA Today.
“I’m not here seeking any kind of revenge on this specific family”. “I know how aggravating it is to receive a hefty bill when all night you’ve been wondering why the table that came in after you was served before you. It’s incredibly hard to fake smile in these situations and be polite to patronizing customers who treat their servers like actual servants instead of human beings”.
By Friday, the Facebook post had gone viral and was brought to the attention of Mayor Matt Doherty, who weighed in on the matter in his own public Facebook post.
