Dion Lewis Awaiting MRI Results on Left Knee
In other words, Lewis should be the definition of a replaceable player.
The New England Patriots have put running back Dion Lewis on injured reserve, ending his season one day after a serious injury to his left knee in a win over Washington. Predicting the five offensive lineman for New England every game has been like shuffling a deck of cards and guessing what you will be dealt. However, his success is more a credit to head coach Bill Belichick’s offensive system than it is to Lewis’ talent.
Although an unpopular view in New England right now, fans will once again realize the genius that is Belichick.
Lewis, a 25-year old product of Albany, came to the Patriots this season after stays with the Eagles, Browns and Colts and injected life into the New England running game. Dion Lewis finished at 165.2.
Washington plays against New Orleans and at Carolina before consecutive divisional home games against the Giants and Cowboys.
Lewis’ knee reportedly has no swelling, but a loose ACL is very bad sign and swelling for an isolated tear doesn’t usually happen until overnight, according to former NFL Physician David J. Chao. Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead, Jonas Gray, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, and Kevin Faulk have all been large parts of the team offense over the years. The guy had sucked before this season and there is no way around that.
The reason why Lewis might not be as replaceable-at least not in midseason-is because he really is capable of a lot of things. Previous best mark over a season was 106.9. Coincidence? I think not. “We know this team is a great football team and they’ve earned it for a long time”.
After Lewis went down against the Redskins on Sunday, the Patriots leaned on a heavy dose of LeGarrette Blount with a successful dab of Brandon Bolden to seal the win against Washington.
Belichick continued to bring in major free agents for the Patriots’ other Super Bowl runs.
With Lewis in the backfield the Patriots averaged 6.47 yards per play and when Lewis wasn’t on the field the Patriots averaged 5.25 yards per play – more than a full yard difference.
With Edelman and Lewis, Brady had two great options in the short passing game. He’s slippery in the open field and can dodge defenders. Through eight games this season, Lewis had broken 43 tackles.
While Bolden has held down a roster spot with a jack-of-all-trades utility, second-year back James White is closer to mastering Lewis’ functionality in situations that call for an uptempo spread attack. McDaniels believes he is the best to fill the hole on the field.
