Dirk Nowitzki to Re-Sign With Mavericks on 2-Year Deal
Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks have reached an agreement that should keep the 38-year-old in Dallas for the remainder of his career.
Nowitzki and the Mavericks are still finalizing some of the details. After playing sparingly for Memphis, Cleveland and Phoenix his first three years, Curry averaged 6.8 points and 1.5 assists in 44 games for Sacramento last season. He’ll again be one of the Mavericks’ top scoring options in 2016-17. ESPN’s Marc Stein first reported the news on Twitter. Nowitzki had said the only way he wouldn’t return is if the Mavericks tried to surround him with unproven players. Barnes and Bogut both were part of the Golden State Warriors team that won the NBA title in 2015 and lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the most recent NBA Finals.
But Dallas did land two likely starters in Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut, castoffs from the Golden State Warriors who became available after Kevin Durant landed in Oakland on Monday.
Nowitzki has spent his entire 18-year career with Dallas after they selected him with the ninth overall pick in 1998.
Meanwhile, the Pelicans have just under $5 million in cap space after small forward Solomon Hill agreed to a five-year, $52 million deal and shooting guard E’Twaun Moore accepted a four-year, $34 million deal.
Nowitzki guided the Mavs to the franchise’s lone championship and was selected the MVP of the 2011 NBA Finals.
Nowitzki has averaged 25.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 0.9 blocks in 145 playoff games.
