‘Dirty Dancing’ Remake Will Star Abigail Breslin
The network has officially greenlit a remake of Dirty Dancing, the 1987 romantic drama that put Patrick Swazye and Jennifer Grey at the center of one of the most iconic movie dances of all time.
Abigail Breslin will star as Baby, the part originally played by Jennifer Grey in the 1987 film.
The TV movie version will air on ABC and will be a musical, but filmed ahead instead of following the live format that is becoming increasingly popular.
Abigal Breslin, who starred in “Little Miss Sunshine” and now plays Libby on “Scream Queens”, will portray the Baby, who falls in love with a dance instructor at the resort where her family is vacationing.
ABC has been developing the “Dirty Dancing” TV movie for quite some time, and began going out to talent for the two lead roles about one year ago.
The new made-for-television movie from Lionsgate TV is described as a three-hour event with a script written by Jessica Sharzer, an Emmy-nominated writer from “American Horror Story”. On TV, there was previously a short-lived Dirty Dancing series in 1988.
Dirty Dancing fans, lend us your ears. Sadly, the role of Johnny – originated by Patrick Swayze – has yet to be cast. Lionsgate TV will produce in association with Allison Shearmur Productions.
Now, there is of course a question as to whether or not we need more “Dirty Dancing”, just as there are questions as to whether or not we need numerous remakes that are being thrown out there at the moment.
Wayne Blair is on board to helm the project and Tony victor Andy Blankenbuehler, who choreographed the hit Broadway musical HAMILTON will serve as choreographer.
A premiere date for ABC’s “Dirty Dancing” has not yet been announced.
