Disguised gunmen target boxing fans in Dublin hotel; 1 dead
Criminal David Byrne was shot dead and two others injured as two gunmen armed with AK-47s – and two others with handguns – opened fire in the Regency Hotel in Dublin.
Fans attending the weigh-in ceremonies for a Dublin boxing event fled in terror as two gunmen wearing police uniforms opened fire inside the lobby of the Regency Hotel.
Hotel manager John Glynn saw one man shot dead in the reception area of the hotel.
The other two were taken to hospital with suspected gunshot wounds, but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Three injured men had been found by the emergency workers who were all in their 20s and 30s, as per the statement read.
It occurred in the hotel lobby next to a function room, where the weigh-in for the Clash of the Clans boxing bout scheduled to take place on Saturday evening, was just finishing up.
Fighters on the bill include Dublin boxer Jamie Kavanagh, who will fight for the WBO European lightweight title against Portuguese Antonio Joao Bento.
“I jumped over the reception desk, I think I smashed the vase on my way, then the gunman came over to reception, looked down at me and pointed the gun at me, and I shouted, I was shouting even before he came over “don’t shoot, don’t shoot”, he said.
We know that there were a considerable number of people present in the Regency Hotel and we are appealing to them to provide any information they may have in relation to the shooting.
He was standing on the podium when the automatic weapons rang out.
One man has died and two others after the attack at a boxing tournament weigh-in.
A dad has described the terrifying moment gunmen burst in to a hotel brandishing AK47s and shot a man lying next to him.
“It was just so surreal, it happened so quickly”.
One eyewitness, who didn’t want to be named, told the Irish Mirror: “One man ran in dressed in police or army style clothing and started shooting an AK47”.
“I’ve been involved with boxing worldwide and I’ve never seen anything like it”.
Sky News’ Enda Brady said the shooting – about two miles north of the city centre – is being linked to a gangland feud. He said the attackers had targeted specific individuals.
One video clip shows the last boxer weighing in at about 2.20pm when the armed men appears in the room and panic breaks out, with people fleeing to safety.
Box Nation, the group responsible for broadcasting the event, have announced that the show has been cancelled due to the circumstances.
Jamie Moore, a former European boxing champion, was shot in the legs two years ago in Marbella, where he was training Macklin.
