Dish DVRs will soon be working with Google Assistant

Google’s voice recognition is especially impressive, and I think the overall progress the tech industry has made toward allowing machines to understand natural-language commands is often overlooked and underrated. He doesn’t believe having a TV with Google Assistant will dissuade consumers who have Amazon Echos with Alexa in their homes. Amid the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, well-known computer brands announced Alexa will be enabled on their laptops and devices.

And there could be trouble ahead for Amazon, he adds, when it attempts to take Alexa to markets beyond the U.S. and Europe. Scott Huffman, vice president of engineering for Google Assistant, showed up to talk about the search giant’s relationship with LG, and how it’s expanded from Android phones to appliances and televisions over the past year and a half.

The tech giant’s Assistant is also being added to more vehicle entertainment systems, thanks to Android Auto, where it enables a hands-free means of checking in on Google apps. Only Siri missed out on the party, though Apple’s assistant tends to be more of a lone wolf, anyway. The Vuzix Blade, its latest pair of augmented reality spectacles tries to balance that B2B / consumer sales pitch by adding a voice assistant. You can control the lights with your voice. Most of the users just ask it tell time, weather, traffic and play music. Smoke alarm? Check. A $1,300 smart mirror? “Our vision for Alexa is that she should be everywhere a customer might need her – at home, in the office, on phones – and in cars”.

Amazon’s Alexa is extending its domain to a whole new set of gadgets. Over the past year, we’ve been working to bring the Assistant to more devices in more places and now it’s available on more than 400 million devices.

According to Amazon, the kit will become available for developers ‘later this year’.

Amazon has already said that Bose, Jabra, iHome, Beyerdynamic, Bowers & Wilkins, among others, plan on adding Alexa to various Bluetooth audio devices in the coming months. Google Glass itself may make a return of sorts in the enterprise market.

LG’s new ThinQ WK7 smart display features an 8-inch touch display, about an inch larger than the Echo Show, and boasts Meridian Audio, Chromecast connectivity, and YouTube and Duo support.
