Disney Adds Alligator Warning Signs, Barriers After Florida Attack
Disney World Resort on Friday announced plans to install beach signs in Florida to warn visitors about alligators after one dragged a 2-year-old boy into the water, killing him. “To all of the local authorities and staff who worked tirelessly these past 24 hours, we express our deepest gratitude”, they said in their statement.
Jacquee Wahler, a vice president of communications with the company, said in a statement Thursday evening: “We have closed all of our beaches and have made a decision to add signage, and we are also conducting a swift and thorough review of all of our processes and protocols”.
“As a parent and a grandparent, my heart goes out to the Graves family during this time of devastating loss”, he said.
Photos showed workers drilling post holes in the stretch where little Lane Graves disappeared along with the predatory reptile outside the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.
Workers were seen Friday installing fence posts on the beach at Disney where the attack occurred.
Lane Graves of Nebraska died after being pulled under the water by an alligator while he was wading in 1 to 2 feet of water at the Seven Seas Lagoon at a Walt Disney World beach.
Five alligators were removed from the lake during the search for the child, whose body was found in the water Wednesday.
Lane’s body has been turned over to the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
State wildlife officials say Disney has an active alligator monitoring program and an open permit to trap alligators on its properties that are deemed to be a nuisance. “We are devastated and ask for privacy during this extremely hard time”. Previous signage warned not to swim in the water, but did not mention gators.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it’s investigating the death of Lane, as well as whether the agency captured the alligator responsible for the attack.
Walt Disney World Resort doesn’t want another alligator-related tragedy.
