Disney ‘to make Mary Poppins sequel’
Disney is currently developing the musical together with “Into the Woods” director Rob Marshall and producers John DeLuca and Mac Platt.
Disney bosses and Marshall have been collaborating with the Travers estate for the movie, and have already earned the support from Mary Poppins co-composer Richard Sherman. With Disney’s recent success bring their old animated properties to life, it seems that all of their classic live-action films will be getting the same treatment.
The announcement of this new film also came with other names attached, which suggests this project will be getting off the ground fairly soon. Joining him as songwriters to compose new scores and original sounds are Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman who previously worked in the pop culture hits “Hairspray” and “Smash“.
Disney is cranking out even more interesting ideas from its vault and has chose to pick up on a new storyline with the very loveable singing British nanny Mary Poppins. Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke were absolute perfection in their roles, and many people still consider the film a favorite today, over 50 years since its original release.
At this point in time, there aren’t any rumors about the cast, which will undoubtedly be made up of A-listers. And speculation began instantly as to who was going to be holding Julie Andrews’ umbrella. A spokesman for William Hill told the BBC: “Hollywood’s leading ladies will all be vying for this role but given her striking resemblance to Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway is the early favourite”.
The cast of Walt Disney’s “Mary Poppins” movie has not yet been disclosed.
