Disney World intern fired over alligator tweet gets job back
Shannon Sullivan, a Walt Disney World cast member (Disney refers to its theme park employees as “cast members”) who was sacked for tweeting a picture of an insensitive sign about alligators in an employees-only area, has gotten her job back, The Orlando Sentinel is reporting. That sign has emerged. It tells employees to respond to guests asking if there are gators in the Rivers to say “Not that we know of, but if we see one, we call Pest Management to have it removed” in an effort to prevent guests from being afraid while walking in Frontierland.
Disney employees are advised to tell visitors that parts of the theme park does attract wildlife and that guests should notify security when they see alligators.
In addition, it also said “Please do not say that we have seen them before”.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Shannon Sullivan, an intern in the Disney College Program, shared the photo via Twitter because she was offended by the sign that was posted in a break room.
“At this point, it became my morals and integrity and what I believe in”.
“I think you need to be telling people to be cautious, letting them know this could happen”, she concluded.
After the Sentinel got word of Sullivan’s termination, Disney quickly changed their minds and offered her her job back.
Disney says those instruction were not authorized and the intern is back at work.
A 2-year-old boy was killed by an alligator at the park last month.
Disney said it does not know who posted the sign, but no one was being disciplined for it.
“The managers can and do make their own signs to put up there”. “They’re announcement signs, and those are everywhere. Don’t park your auto in that lot tomorrow because it’s being paved.’ Stuff like that”.
Firefighters at Walt Disney World were warned to stop feeding alligators at one of the resort’s fire stations two months before the deadly attack.
