Divergent Film Series Will Conclude With A TV Series
Would you watch The Divergent Series: Ascendant as a TV movie?
The first two Divergent films grossed a little under $300 million worldwide each, but Allegiant is ending its worldwide theatrical run with under $180 million.
Scheduled to debut June 2017, Lionsgate is now mulling over the possibilities of making Ascendant a TV movie with a network that might be interested in an accompanying spinoff show. The latest film’s status after the release caused the production to rethink about the film and instead have it as a TV series. Unfortunately, “Allegiant” didn’t do so well resulting to its second part discarded into the small screen. The studio also plans to tie up the old storyline of Tris, played in the film by Shailene Woodley, before introducing a new dystopian TV series with fresh faces and missions, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Did the bad reviews of the “Allegiant” cause its finale, “The Divergent Series: Ascendant”, not to reach the big screen?
The first two Divergent films – Divergent and Insurgent – were box-office smashes, pulling in over $150m (£113.6m) and $130m in the U.S. respectively. As fiction for the young adults, the story is set in a post-apocalyptic society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities. It’s also “not clear” if stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, etc. would opt to stick around for the potential TV movie. However, filming, which was initially set to begin this summer in Atlanta, has been pushed back. Additionally, Allegiant director Robert Schwentke just departed the film and was replaced with Lee Toland Krieger (The Age of Adaline). Roth went on to say that she was certain it would make fans of the books wary, but she had high hopes for how Lionsgate would approach them.
