Djokovic A World Tour victor Once Again
“Hopefully it will continue for many more years”. But that is only the beginning. “For him it’s an advantage because he gets a second chance, and he’s in another final”.
The six-time tournament champion cruised through the week without dropping a match, and while Federer asserted his all-court game for stretches, he couldn’t consistently produce the key stroke to unsettle Djokovic’s lock-down baseline style. Of those six losses, three have been down to Federer. “I’m convinced with this dedication to the sport, I can acheive more”. Djokovic had played more than 24 hours before the final, Federer cut back on his media obligations in an attempt to get away from the O2 by 11pm. Now the legacies of both great champions are under threat as the current world No 1 creates his own era and his own legend.
“This could not have been a better finish, obviously it’s been a very long season but the best of my life” he said.
Federer, on how he will decide when and if to shave his beard: “If it itches too much, I’ll take it off. If my girls can’t stand it, I’ll take it off. If I look in the mirror and I don’t like it, I’ll take it off. Maybe I’ll think of Santa and keep it. (Christmas is) around the corner”.
Talking about the triumph, which capped off a sensational season for the Serbian, Djokovic said that this was the best year of his career so far and acknowledged the support of his team and his family.
“I cherish every moment that I play competing on such a level”.
Djokovic’s consistency throughout 2015 was astonishing and the way in which he dominated all phases of the game – including the most crucial battleground of all in sports, that of players’ psyches – was incredible considering the increasingly physical nature of the sport. He also held off both of the two break points he faced in the match.
Not for the first time, ample history hinged on another meeting between Djokovic and Federer in the finale to the ATP season. From return of serves to first serves and second serves, everything went their way and were more effective to put the match completely in their favour. Federer handed Djokovic just his sixth loss of the year in the round-robin segment – a win that nudged Federer back out in front in their rivalry, 23-22. “It’s hard to play at this pace all the time”.
There is at least little chance of a repeat of 12 months ago, when Federer had to inform the 17,000 spectators that he was unable to play the final.
Unlike last year, with the spectre of the Davis Cup Final lurking in the background, Federer can go into this match knowing that he can go flat out with no playing obligations until January of next year. “This week was great again”. It was a fantastic year all round.
David Ferrer, on if he could have done anything differently against Wawrinka: “I tried to do my best”. A few points were insane. “But Novak deserved to win”.
“There was so much tension mounting in the absolute final game, and after Roger lost the first point on serve, in the second point you could see a change come over Novak”.
The Bryans admitted they hung their heads in the locker room, but the 37-year-old California twins said aren’t going anywhere. Djokovic is as strong as an ox, as supple as a gymnast and there is not an identifiable weakness in his game.
