Djokovic advances to second round at Wimbledon
Among seeded players who advanced in men’s play were No 5 Kei Nishikori of Japan who accounted for Australian Sam Groth 6-4, 6-3, 7-5; No 6 Milos Raonic of Canada who beat Pablo Carreno of Spain 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-4; former US Open champion and No 9 Marin Cilic, No 13 David Ferrer and No 23 Ivo Karlovic.
And in the tournament’s first big surprise, former top-ranked Ana Ivanovic was beaten 6-2, 7-5 by Ekaterina Alexandrova, a Russian qualifier ranked 223rd in the world and making her Grand Slam debut.
“There are plenty of requests each year for Wimbledon towels particularly”.
Ward has had a hard last 12 months.
It is a responsibility Djokovic will apply himself to with the same devotion as his career for the next two years as tennis wrestles with the kind of doping and corruption scandals that have afflicted world sport. In beating Murray at Roland Garros earlier this month, he became the first man in 47 years to hold all four majors.
Djokovic also is looking to complete a calendar Grand Slam, already having won the Australian and French Open in 2016.
The match was played in its entirety under the retractable roof, which was closed after steady rain lashed the grounds and forced delays on all other courts. Djokovic, in contrast, was on his game from the start. Second set was quite close… “Throughout my whole career I have been able to learn a lot, to come back a much better player”.
Since losing the 2015 final in Paris, Djokovic has won 28 Grand Slam matches in a row. “It wasn’t easy to break his serve”. Murray got out to a very slow start in the French Open, being pushed by both Radek Stepanek in the first round and Mathias Bourgue in the second round to a full five sets.
Mannarino broke twice in the opening set, capitalising on three double-faults from his opponent, to move 4-1 ahead and, while he allowed Edmund to break back, he had done enough to move one set clear. In the following game Djokovic went to match point with a splendid drop shot victor and then completed the job with an ace. “I had three break points”. It could easily have been 2 2 because I had advantage and I was up as well. I didn’t get too discouraged with that start.
“But my first serve percentage wasn’t great in the first set”.
“I believe in God and I think he’s put things in my life like that. I’m proud of myself the way I turned it around because it could have been ugly”.
A spokesman for the All England Club said on Friday: “The level of security and policing is commensurate with the threat and multi-layered, and it has been heightened as you would expect with everything that has been going on”.
“Not as great as I want it to be”, Williams said when asked to assess her year so far. However, with Andy, you think he gives you more time but he is there every time on the ball. It was really flawless.
Radwanska has never lost a first-round match in 11 appearances at the All England Club. The back bothered him for a long time in 2013, so he dropped off the tour, “reset”, and prepared for the big titles he had a better chance of winning: Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the U.S. Open.
Federer is struggling for form and fitness. Radwanska won the first four games and was always in control. Jamie said. “I guess for him it depends more on the singles and that sort of stuff”.
